There would be no upset in Bavaria. Facing the still-unbeaten Munich Ravens, the Paris Musketeers fell 45-22 after a contest that was far more competitive than the final score suggests. Outplayed by a German side that once again displayed ruthless efficiency, the French team nevertheless delivered a far stronger performance than in the first meeting between the two teams, when they were crushed 41-7. The defeat leaves the race for the Big 4 wide open, but also provides several reasons for optimism ahead of a decisive showdown with the Tirol Raiders.
The challenge looked enormous. The Munich Ravens entered the game with a perfect 8-0 record and were already looking ahead to next week's blockbuster clash with the Nordic Storm. Yet from the opening whistle, the Musketeers showed they had not traveled to Germany simply to make up the numbers.
Led by an aggressive defensive front, Paris quickly managed to disrupt quarterback Russell Tabor. The Ravens were eventually forced to settle for a field goal after being slowed down by several penalties—a small but encouraging victory for the visitors.
Even better, the Paris offense answered immediately. Zach Edwards engineered a methodical drive that blended an effective running game with sharp intermediate passing. Although the Musketeers also stalled just outside the red zone, Dean Faithfull's field goal tied the game at 3-3, confirming the progress the team had shown after several difficult weeks.
But as has often been the case this season, Munich needed only a handful of plays to seize control. Russell Tabor connected with Louis Geyer on a reception of nearly fifty yards before finding his favorite target again a few minutes later for another touchdown. Without completely dominating the game, the Ravens had already built a comfortable 17-3 lead.
The Musketeers, however, refused to back down. Just before halftime, Zach Edwards found the unstoppable Torin Justice—who finished with 130 receiving yards—in the heart of the end zone to pull Paris back into contention. Unfortunately for the visitors, that momentum was short-lived. With less than a minute remaining in the half, Munich marched effortlessly down the field, and Malik Stanley restored the Ravens' fifteen-point advantage before the break, making it 24-9.
Every time the Musketeers found an offensive spark, Munich had an immediate answer.
The third quarter perfectly summed up that frustration. Paris came agonizingly close to creating two game-changing plays, first on a punt and then by forcing what appeared to be a crucial fumble. On both occasions, however, the ball somehow bounced right back into Ravens hands. Those missed opportunities proved costly, as Philip Okonkwo quickly extended Munich's lead.
Far from giving up, Jack Del Rio's team continued to fight. Facing a crucial fourth down, Zach Edwards remained composed, connected with Torin Justice to keep the drive alive, and then found Liam Ward in the end zone for another touchdown, cutting the deficit to 31-16.
Once again, though, Munich immediately extinguished any hopes of a comeback. The Ravens answered straight away with a powerful rushing touchdown, reminding everyone why they currently sit atop the EFA standings with such authority.
Not even Torin Justice's second touchdown of the afternoon could change the outcome. Although the Paris defense came up with another stop, the offense was unable to mount one final drive, and Dragan crossed the goal line in the closing seconds to seal a 45-22 victory for the home side.
This fifth consecutive defeat is undoubtedly a blow to the Musketeers' playoff hopes. Paris will now have to wait one more week for its opportunity to clinch a place in the Big 4. Everything will come down to the regular-season finale against the Tirol Raiders, a team that has been transformed over the past several weeks and is no longer the manageable opponent it appeared to be earlier this season.
Still, there were positives to take away from the trip to Germany. Against the league's best team, Paris rediscovered a more balanced offense, fielded a defense capable of putting sustained pressure on one of the EFA's top quarterbacks, and, above all, displayed outstanding determination from the opening kickoff until the final whistle.
Only one obstacle now remains. A game where there will be no room for regrets and no time for late responses. Against the Raiders, the Paris Musketeers will simply be playing for their season.
