The hope of bouncing back lasted only a few minutes. Facingone of Europe's top teams on Saturday afternoon at Essonne Stadium, the ParisMusketeers fell 41-3 to the Nordic Storm in EFA Week 10. It was a fourthstraight defeat for the French side, who continue to endure a difficult stretchbefore traveling to face the unbeaten Munich Ravens.
Even before kickoff, the challenge looked enormous. On oneside stood the Musketeers, struggling after three consecutive losses. On theother was a dominant Nordic Storm team that entered the game with a 6-1 recordand fresh off a convincing 48-16 victory over Paris in the first meetingbetween the two teams this season.
The Scandinavian powerhouse wasted no time proving why it isconsidered one of the EFA's elite teams.
The visitors established their rhythm on their opening drive.Although the Paris defense, led by an inspired Mamadou Sy, managed to slow theStorm early on, quarterback Jadrian Clark eventually found the answers. Heconnected with his favorite target, Brendan Beaulieu, for the game's openingtouchdown and gave the visitors the perfect start.
Once the Storm offense got rolling, it became nearlyimpossible to stop. Glen Toonga's powerful running game constantly forced theParis defense to commit extra defenders to the box, creating opportunitiesthrough the air that Clark exploited with remarkable efficiency. The Britishrunning back added the second touchdown of the afternoon before Jakob Greencapped another impressive drive to extend the lead to 21-0 before halftime.
The Musketeers tried to respond. Defensively, they repeatedlyforced the Storm into third-down situations, showing resilience throughout thefirst half. But each time, Clark found a way to keep the chains moving. Onoffense, Zach Edwards was under relentless pressure all afternoon. Rarely giventime in the pocket, the Paris quarterback never found the rhythm needed to gethis offense going. Despite a few promising drives into Storm territory, theMusketeers headed into halftime without putting any points on the board.
Unfortunately for the home crowd, the second half unfoldedmuch like the first.
On one of the opening possessions, Clark found BrendanBeaulieu on a short pass. The American receiver broke several tackles beforeracing down the sideline for his second touchdown of the day, extending thelead to 27-0.
Paris responded with one of its best drives of the afternoon,moving deep into Storm territory. But once again, the Scandinavian defense cameup with a crucial stop, shutting down Zach Edwards on fourth down.
In the middle of a difficult second half, Mamadou Sycontinued to deliver an outstanding performance. Honored before the game, theParis defensive lineman recovered a Brendan Beaulieu fumble to briefly preventthe deficit from growing even larger. It proved to be only a temporaryreprieve.
A few minutes later, facing a spectacular fourth-and-15,Jadrian Clark produced yet another highlight play. His pass found Beaulieu onceagain, who hauled in his third touchdown of the afternoon to make it 35-0.
Despite the difficult afternoon, the Paris faithful finallyhad something to celebrate. After a well-executed drive, the Musketeers optedto take the points. Dean Faithfull drilled a long field goal, allowing Paris toavoid being shut out and putting the home team on the scoreboard at 35-3.
However, even that brief moment of joy was short-lived. Onthe ensuing kickoff, Simon Fons returned the ball the length of the field for aspectacular kickoff return touchdown, sealing the Storm's emphatic 41-3victory.
The upcoming bye week comes at the perfect time for Paris. Itwill give Jack Del Rio's squad an opportunity to recover physically, butperhaps more importantly, to regain confidence before the decisive finalstretch of the regular season. Despite the current losing streak, the race forthe playoffs is far from over. The Musketeers now turn their attention to adaunting road trip in two weeks against the Munich Ravens, who remainedundefeated in EFA play entering Week 10.
